  6. With all the talk about teenage prodigies, it's refreshing
  7. to know that players over age 20 can still win at the game's
  8. highest levels. In fact, August proved to be a pretty good
  9. month for a few veteran Grandmasters, two of whom tied for
  10. first in separate FIDE Category 13 tournaments.
  11.  
  12. Sixty-two year old Viktor Korchnoi will undoubtedly be
  13. remembered by chess historians as one of the strongest
  14. senior players of all-time. After having beaten 24 year old
  15. Dutch GM Jeroen Piket in a match earlier in the year,
  16. Korchnoi finished in a first place tie with him at the Volmac
  17. tourney held in Antwerp, Belgium during 6-15 August. Both had
  18. identical 6.5-2.5 scores, one-half point ahead of American
  19. Larry Christiansen, who led for much of the way.

  21. Four Grandmasters followed: Dutchman John Van der Wiel was
  22. alone in fourth with a 5-4 score, while Curt Hansen, Jonathan
  23. Speelman and one of the local Belgian favorites, Mikhail
  24. Gurevich, all finished with an even 4.5-4.5.

  26. Two other Belgians, IM Luc Winants and FM Marc Dutreeuw had
  27. 3.5 and 2, respectively. Lev Polugaevsky, who had to forfeit
  28. three games due to an auto accident, also ended with 2
  29. points.

  31. At the annual Akiba Rubinstein Memorial, held in Polanica
  32. Zdroj, Poland, another veteran player peformed admirably.
  33. An infrequent tournament participant, 50 year old GM Gennady
  34. Sosonko, formerly of the Soviet Union but a Dutch resident
  35. for the last twenty years, finished atop the final standings
  36. with German GM Jorg Hickl. Their 6.5-4.5 scores were one-half
  37. point better than three other veterans--41 year old Zoltan
  38. Ribli and Oleg Romanishin and 42 year Ulf Andersson, the only
  39. player to finish without a loss.

  41. Remaining scores were as follows: Dorfman and Dolmatov, 5.5-
  42. 5.5; GMs Sax and L.B.Hansen and Polish IM Markowski, 5-6;
  43. Polish IMs Kuczynski and Gdanski, 4.5-6.5.

  45. Korchnoi's crucial final round victory over Gurevich gave
  46. him a share of the crown at Antwerp.
